Walk With Me

One man’s walk home from incarceration — and a movement built so the next generation never has to take the same road. These are the stories, told the only way they can be told: by somebody who lived them.

The Viral Moment

One Act of Kindness. Twenty-Four Million Views.

24M+Views & counting

Last month, a bad storm rolled through Chicago — the kind that turns streets into rivers. Driving through it, Jamel came across a single mother and her three children caught out in the rain, soaked and stranded. He didn’t keep driving. He pulled over and offered them a ride.

He filmed it and posted it — and it exploded to over 24 million views. That one video put Jamel in front of the masses. Then the news came calling: CBS News Chicago featured him in its “Listening to You: Storm Heroes” segment, reported by Charlie De Mar, crediting his Instagram @jamelbuckbuckmiller.

The video got the world’s attention. Everything below is how he keeps it.

Book One

10-3 The Hard Way

Where the walk begins. Before the cells and the courtrooms, there was a kid learning the streets the only way the streets teach — the hard way. This is the first chapter of Jamel Miller’s story: the choices, the crew, the code, and the slow slide toward a life that was never going to let him walk away clean.

Book Two

The Point of No Return

Every life in the streets has a moment where the doors start closing — where the choices pile up so high there’s no climbing back over them. Book two takes the story to that edge: loyalty tested, lines crossed, and the moment a man realizes the road only goes one way — unless he’s willing to pay for a different one.

Book Three

On the Run

Running from the law. Running from the past. Running from himself. Book three is the chase — the longest nights, the closest calls, and the weight a man carries when stopping means facing everything. It’s also where the running ends — and where the hardest walk of all begins.

Book Four · The Conclusion

Back for the First Time

The final chapter of the saga. He came home — but coming home was only the beginning. Back for the First Time is the walk after the walk: freedom with a record, rebuilding a life brick by brick, and everything reentry really demands from a man determined to stay free. The conclusion to the story the first three books started.

  • Life since the return homeReentry with nothing filtered out — the ups and the downs, the good and the bad, the paperwork, the setbacks, the wins.

The Movement

Reentry Is a Walk Nobody Should Take Alone

Coming home is not the end of the sentence — for a lot of people, it’s the hardest part of it. New rules, closed doors, a record that walks into every room before you do. The Walk With Me movement exists for that road.

It grows out of Jamel’s own return home and his reentry work in Chicago — including storytelling and advocacy with the reentry community — and it’s being built into the Walk With Me Foundation: a home for the circles, the mentoring, and the second-chance work that one man’s story started.

Storytelling That Tells the Truth

Lived experience, spoken plainly. The books, the podcast, and live story circles give people coming home a microphone instead of a label.

Second-Chance Advocacy

Showing up where decisions get made — for fair hiring, for housing, and for the idea that a person is more than the worst thing they ever did.

Walking With People Coming Home

Mentorship and community for the first days, weeks, and years back — because the difference between making it and going back is often one person who picks up the phone.

Reaching the Kids First

The other half of reentry is prevention. The Walk With Me Teacher’s Manual takes these stories into classrooms and youth programs for ages 8–18 — before the system ever gets a name.

“I learned it the hard way so they don’t have to. That’s the whole movement.”
— Jamel Miller

The Reentry Work, On Camera

Anybody can talk about second chances. Jamel shows up for them — launch nights, street corners, national conferences, rooms full of people walking the same road home. This is the work: in person, in the community, not just talk.

The Walk With Me Teacher’s Manual

A curriculum built out of real life. The manual turns the scenes of the book series into lessons that teach young people to see things happening before they come to fruition — and remove themselves before it ever comes. A blueprint drawn from mistakes already made, so a new generation doesn’t have to make them. Outline below — the full manual is in development now.

Ages 8–11

Young Walkers

  • Choices and consequences, in stories they can hold onto
  • Spotting pressure early — and the adults you can run to
  • Storytelling, drawing, and role-play activities
  • “My circle”: naming the people who walk with you
Ages 12–14

The Crossroads Years

  • Peer pressure and the setups hidden inside it
  • Loyalty vs. safety: when “riding for somebody” costs you everything
  • Social media, group chats, and evidence that never goes away
  • Scenes from 10-3 The Hard Way, adapted for the classroom
Ages 15–18

Before It Comes to Fruition

  • The full arc: all three published books, read and debated
  • Decision rehearsal on real scenarios from the saga
  • The true price list: court, records, and doors that close
  • Building the alternative — work, mentors, and a plan with your name on it

How Every Lesson Is Built

Step 1The Scene

A real moment from the books opens the lesson — the story first, always.

Step 2The Moment

The class finds the exact choice point where the road split.

Step 3See It Coming

The warning signs that were there before it happened get named, one by one.

Step 4The Blueprint

What to do instead — the exit, the words, the move that changes the ending.

Step 5Walk It Out

Role-play, writing, and reflection that rehearse the better choice until it’s reflex.

About the Author

Jamel Miller

Jamel Miller is a Chicago author and reentry advocate. His four-book saga — 10-3 The Hard Way, The Point of No Return, On the Run, and the upcoming conclusion, Back for the First Time — tells his story the way it happened: the streets, the system, and the long walk home from incarceration.

Since coming home, he has put that story to work — in reentry advocacy and storytelling in Chicago, and now in the Walk With Me movement: the books, the podcast, the gear, and a teacher’s manual built to reach kids ages 8–18 before the road he took ever opens up in front of them.

“Walk with me — I’ll show you the road, so you never have to take it.”
